Characteristics
- Mechanical cardiac valve prostheses are indicated in patients who suffer from some type of valvular heart disease, without age restriction: Obstruction or stenosis, Regurgitation, Incompetence or insufficiency (or their combination), Replacement of a previously implanted prosthesis that does not function properly.
- Models can be supra-annular or intra-annular.
- The main objectives of this type of prosthesis are: to improve the effective valve area, to reduce the pressure gradient and to improve hemodynamic performance. This leads to reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with valve disease.
- All mechanical valve prostheses are bivalve, made of titanium, coated with pyrolytic carbon, which is an element that reduces thromboembolic processes within the valve.
- Patients must use Anticoagulant Therapy at all times and while they have the valve implanted, to prevent Strokes.
- All models feature white markers to aid alignment and seating on the valve ring.
- They are designed with a Dacron bearing with carbofilm and silicone, which allows easy placement of sutures.
- Among the different models available for aortic valve replacement, the Carbomedics Top-Hat supra-annular model is the most appropriate indication for double valve replacement procedures.
- Minimizes the risk of interference and theft with the mitral valve prosthesis.
- Available sizes: 19 – 21 – 23 – 25 – 27 mm.
