These pumps are self-sealing centrifugal pumps without shaft seals, driven electromagnetically by a diaphragm motor. Due to their hermetic construction, they require little maintenance. To cool the motor and lubricate the plain bearings as well as to compensate for axial thrust, a portion of the main flow is diverted through a self-cleaning filter. The cooling flow is then returned to the main flow on the discharge side.
